On the deck of a large steamship, sailing from New York to Buenos Aires, stands the hero on whose behalf the story is told. His friend, seeing the camera flashes, reports that the world chess champion Mirko Centovich, who defeated the best chess players in America, is sailing on the same ship, and, on occasion, tells several stories about him.
The champion’s father’s boat sank when he was 12 years old. The pastor who sheltered the orphan often played chess with the sergeant, and one day, when the pastor was busy, the sergeant jokingly invited Mirko, who was always watching the game, to play with him. Surprisingly, the stupid boy, who at the age of 14 barely knows the alphabet and counts on his fingers, easily beats both him and the priest. After a series of victories over local regulars at the chess club, he is apprenticed to a chess expert from Vienna. At 18, the boatman’s son becomes the Hungarian champion, and at 20, the world champion.
Despite his obvious chess talent, Mirko cannot play from memory, blindly. His habits, lack of education and outright stupidity, greed push people away from him. At the same time, the awareness that he is better than all these educated and cultured people makes Czentovic arrogant and arrogant.
The hero wants to meet the champion, but he prefers loneliness. A “trap” is set for him – the hero plays chess with his wife in the evenings, hoping to warm up Czentovic’s “professional interest”. Soon, instead of his wife, the hero’s rival becomes a Scotsman, mining engineer Mac Connor, who became rich in the oil fields of California. Czentovic sees one of the games, but it does not arouse his interest. A proud Scot, having learned that the world chess champion is sailing on the same ship with him, certainly wants to play with him. Mirko is ready to play only for a fabulous $250 per game; the rich and gambling oilman agrees.
The next day the match took place.

Несмотря на явный шахматный талант, Мирко не может играть по памяти, вслепую. Его повадки, необразованность и откровенная тупость, жадность отталкивают от него людей. При этом осознание того, что он лучше всех этих образованных и культурных людей делают Чентовича заносчивым и надменным.
Герой хочет познакомиться с чемпионом, но тот предпочитает одиночество. Для него расставляется «ловушка» — герой играет по вечерам в шахматы с женой, рассчитывая разогреть «профессиональный интерес» Чентовича. Вскоре вместо жены соперником героя становится шотландец, горный инженер Мак Коннор, разбогатевший на нефтяных приисках Калифорнии. Чентович видит одну из партий, но она не вызывает у него интереса. Самолюбивый шотландец, узнавший, что на одном с ним корабле плывет чемпион мира по шахматам, непременно хочет сыграть с ним. Мирко готов играть только за баснословные 250$ за партию, богатый и азартный нефтяник соглашается.
На следующий день состоялся матч.
