The heroes of V. Potanin came into his stories from the life that the writer himself lives. There is a large grain-growing village on the banks of the Trans-Ural Tobol River, the one where there is “open space and a forest all around.” In such a village, the old stove-maker Grigory Lovygin, famous in the area, still lives (the story “For the Sake of this Minute”), and a good man-singer – Ninth-grader Volodya, an eccentric who dreams of growing poplars on salt licks (the story “Cranks”), and an old writer, the wisest, most cheerful in the village, Ivan Zakomaldin (the story “When the Rains Gone”). All of them live an intense, complex spiritual life, they are all infinitely kind and do not tolerate falsehood, evil, or injustice.
