The book contains the most outstanding spiritual works of St. Philaret, Metropolitan of Moscow, one of the greatest ascetics and theologians of the Russian Church. He subordinated his entire life to the will of God and worked for the glory of God. For his great zeal for the Lord and his great labors, God gave Saint Philaret the gracious gifts of clairvoyance and healing. He became the founder of Russian biblical scholarship. At his insistence and under his supervision, the first Russian translation of the Holy Bible was published. As a great theologian, Metropolitan Philaret taught that only through a personal “Golgotha,” through the mortification of carnal and secular passions, can a person count on his salvation. The saint made a huge contribution to the creation of the theory of the Russian monarchical state.
