That part of our being that from time to time thwarts the fulfillment of our highest aspirations and ideals is called by various names: the dark side, the inner enemy, the anti-self, the unreal self, the lesser self, another name for this enemy – the guardian of the threshold, for he hides on the threshold of self-awareness – where the conscious and subconscious mind meet.
The meeting with the internal enemy was vividly described in the books “Frankenstein” by Mary Shelley and “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” by Robert Louis Stevenson, as well as in the classic film epic “Star Wars.” But for most of us, the encounter with the guardian of the threshold is less catastrophic, since the enemy within manifests itself in disguise, hoping that we will not notice how it hides among the shadows, appearing from time to time to wreak havoc and disorder in our lives. We only see the tip of the iceberg and most often have no idea what we are actually facing.
