“Descent into Hell” is an article by the famous Russian writer Nikolai Semenovich Leskov (1831-1895), first published in 1894 in the Petersburg Newspaper and telling about the origins of Russian icon painting. Analyzing the plot of the icon “Resurrection with the Descent”, the writer establishes that it is determined by the contents of the apocryphal Gospel of Nicodemus – a unique early Christian source. The Pharisee Nicodemus is known to be a secret follower of Jesus (John 3:1-15). The Gospel of Nicodemus is a unique early Christian apocryphal source from the 4th century. It consists of two parts – “The Acts of Pilate” and “The Descent into Hell”. The Gospel of Nicodemus describes, among other things, the descent of Jesus into hell, the destruction of its gates and the exodus to heaven from the depths of hell of all the Old Testament righteous, including the ancestors of mankind Adam and Eve.
