Leonid Maksimovich Leonov: Thief

The novel “The Thief,” written by Leonid Leonov in 1925–1926 and expanded in the late 1950s, stands apart from the background of Soviet literature of that time – its plot and characters are too atypical. At the same time, the characteristic, bright artistic style of a very young writer at that time, his closeness to the traditions of Russian classical literature, were highly appreciated by his colleagues and were reflected in more than one famous work of those years.

The main character of the novel, Mitya Vekshin, is a former Red commander who recently fought for the ideals of the revolution, was expelled from the army for his violent temper and is now disappointed in his former beliefs, seeing how the “bright future” has degenerated into the wretched reality of the NEP. Having joined a gang of thieves, he achieved success in his new craft. The old life is left behind, and in it is the family and also Vekshina’s fiancée, the beautiful Masha Dolomanova. But you can’t escape the past, and very soon the Thief will have to face his messengers, and in such a dramatic way that he could not even imagine.

Роман «Вор», написанный Леонидом Леоновым в 1925–1926 г. и дополненный в конце 1950-х, стоит особняком на фоне советской литературы того времени — слишком уж нетипичны его сюжет и персонажи. При этом характерная, яркая художественная манера совсем молодого на тот момент писателя, его близость традициям русской классической литературы были высоко оценены коллегами и нашли отражение не в одном прославленном произведении тех лет.

Главный герой романа Митя Векшин — в прошлом красный командир, еще недавно сражавшийся за идеалы революции, был изгнан из армии за буйный нрав и теперь разочарован в прежних убеждениях, видя, как «светлое будущее» выродилось в убогую действительность НЭПа. Примкнув к воровской шайке, он добился успеха в новом ремесле. Прежняя жизнь осталась позади, а в ней семья и еще невеста Векшина красавица Маша Доломанова. Но от прошлого не уйти, и совсем скоро Вору предстоит столкнуться с его посланцами, да так драматично, как он и представить себе не мог.
