Friends and enemies of the Luther family have left us a lot of written material. Researchers have studied and verified it for centuries. There is hardly another figure from Germany’s past whose life has been as thoroughly documented as the life of Martin Luther and, accordingly, in many ways his wife. And if we distract ourselves from the praises of flatterers and the poisonous speeches of slanderers and leave letters and testimonies to speak for themselves, we will see completely ordinary conflicts, illnesses, fears, doubts, complaints and death. We will hear rude curses and bitter irony, but at the same time words of tenderness, jokes and songs. It is not at all the ideal of the Protestant priest’s house that appears before our mind’s eye, but living people who in everyday life often lacked strength and patience as much as we do.
