Korolenko Vladimir Galaktionovich: Small collected works

Contemporaries called Korolenko “the conscience of the era.” His popularity was very great; almost the entire reading population of Russia listened to his every word. Some were attracted by the author’s ability to compassion and love, others by his optimism and belief that a person is guided by the desire for justice. Leo Tolstoy and Ivan Bunin, Maxim Gorky and Anton Chekhov saw him as the ideal image of a Russian writer and intellectual. Korolenko entered the history of Russian literature primarily as the author of numerous novels and stories that formed a kind of chronicle of Russian life at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The most famous of them (“Makar’s Dream”, “Children of the Dungeon”, “The Blind Musician”, “The River Plays”, “Without a Tongue”, etc.) are presented in this collection.

Современники называли Короленко «совестью эпохи». Его популярность была очень велика, к каждому его слову прислушивалась едва ли не вся читающая Россия. Одних привлекала способность автора к состраданию и любви, других — его оптимизм и вера в то, что человеком руководит стремление к справедливости. Идеальный образ русского писателя и интеллигента видели в нем Лев Толстой и Иван Бунин, Максим Горький и Антон Чехов. В историю русской литературы Короленко вошел прежде всего как автор многочисленных повестей и рассказов, составивших своеобразную летопись русской жизни на рубеже XIX–XX веков. Наиболее известные из них («Сон Макара», «Дети подземелья», «Слепой музыкант», «Река играет», «Без языка» и др.) представлены в этом сборнике.
