“We” is a landmark novel by Yevgeny Zamyatin, from which the very existence of the “dystopian” genre officially begins. Banned during the Soviet period, it is now considered one of the cult works of not only Russian, but also world literature of the twentieth century.

This novel is about a “society of equals,” in which the human personality is reduced to a “number.” Everything is unified in it – clothes and apartments, thoughts and feelings. There is no family, no strong attachments… Dmitry Bykov said this well: “The author very accurately and convincingly described the utopia of the mind, closed in on itself, doomed to loneliness, deprived of contact with the outside world. According to Zamyatin, the main tragedy is that a person can defeat the beast within himself, go into the pure kingdom of rationality, which will be destructive for humanity.”

“Мы” – знаковый роман Евгения Замятина, с которого официально отсчитывается само существование жанра “антиутопия”. Запрещенный в советский период, теперь он считается одним из культовых произведений не только русской, но и мировой литературы ХХ века.

Роман этот об “обществе равных”, в котором человеческая личность сведена к “нумеру”. В нем унифицировано все – одежда и квартиры, мысли и чувства. Нет ни семьи, ни прочных привязанностей… Об этом хорошо сказал Дмитрий Быков: “Автор очень точно и убедительно описал утопию разума, замкнутого в самом себе, обреченного на одиночество, лишенного контакта с внешним миром. По мысли Замятина, главная трагедия в том, что человек может победить в себе зверя, уйти в чистое царство рациональности, которое окажется губительно для человечества”.
