The action of the novel by one of the leading Spanish writers develops in two time plans: at the beginning of the last century and in 1975 in the days when Franco died. The hero writes a book about Goya, the work on which leads him to understand the patterns of national history, makes him think seriously about turning points in the history of Spain and possible ways to democratize the country.
