Gogol Nikolai Vasilievich: Notes of a Madman

“The Overcoat”, “The Nose”, “Portrait” and other “Petersburg stories” by Gogol still amaze the reader with their diversity. Realism in them is closely intertwined with fantasy, tragedy with mischievous humor. Reading and re-reading them, we involuntarily sympathize with the pitiful official Akaki Akakievich, we enthusiastically follow the phantasmagoric adventures of a nose that has taken on a life of its own and escaped from its owner, we experience the tragedy of an artist who was deceived in his “genius of pure beauty” – and again and again we discover for ourselves the relevance of Gogol, who, like no one else, knew how to see the eternal and great behind the private and small.

“Шинель”, “Нос”, “Портрет” и другие “Петербургские повести” Гоголя до сих пор поражают читателя своим разнообразием. Реализм в них тесно переплетается с фантастикой, трагизм – с озорным юмором. Читая и перечитывая их, мы невольно сострадаем жалкому чиновнику Акакию Акакиевичу, с увлечением следим за фантасмагорическими приключениями зажившего собственной жизнью носа, сбежавшего от хозяина, переживаем трагедию художника, обманувшегося в своем “гении чистой красоты”, – и снова и снова открываем для себя актуальность Гоголя, как никто умевшего за частным и мелким увидеть вечное и великое.
