Bushido Inadze Nitobe was born into a famous samurai family in Marioka Prefecture, but despite this he was always close to Western culture. “I began to write an article about Bushido, in which I want to show that these Commandments of Chivalry reveal the essence of the Japanese character and contain the key to understanding moral spirit of the Japanese,” writes Inadze Nitobe to William Griffis, the author of many books about Japan. With the beginning of the Russo-Japanese War, the expanded edition of the book became bestseller and gave Nitobe the status of a “publicist speaking on behalf of Japan” – a cultural intermediary between Japan and the West.
