The biographical dictionary, using examples of the life, works and exploits of missionaries, shows the history of the missionary activity of the Russian Orthodox Church, starting from the time of the Baptism of Rus’ in 988 to the present day. It contains more than 260 articles about the founders of missions, missionary societies and organizations, educators, theologians, scientists, teachers, and translators. Among them are the martyrs who enlightened the pagan tribes and peoples, as well as the new martyrs and confessors of the 20th century. From the biographies we learn about the history of internal Russian missions – in the Volga region, the Caucasus, Central Asia, Siberia, the Far East, as well as foreign missions – in China, Korea, Japan, North America, Persia and Palestine. We will also find here the names of bishops and pastors, philosophers and writers of the Russian Abroad. The book is addressed to the widest readership – scientists, teachers, students, anyone interested in the history of Orthodox missionary work. The dictionary can be recommended as a teaching aid for the course “Fundamentals of Orthodox Culture.”
