In his main work, “Journey from St. Petersburg and Moscow,” which sharply denounces the autocracy, the Russian writer, public figure, and revolutionary thinker A. N. Radishchev (1749-1802) was the first to depict the people and make the Russian serf the hero of the book. Both his philosophical prose and his poetic heritage (the ode “Liberty”) are imbued with the ideas of love of freedom.
